Welding Consumable Batch

A filler metal batch is an identifiable quantity of a filler with uniform chemical analysis, to ensure quality and traceability of the weld.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

An identifiable batch of a filler material is a specified quantity of an addition, such as silicon or titanium, that is added to the melt. This batch has a uniform chemical composition and is produced under strictly controlled conditions.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Using an identifiable batch ensures that the additions are evenly distributed in the melt. This prevents uneven compositions and thus potential weak spots or cracks in the weld. Wrong batch sizes can lead to insufficient or excessive addition, which can affect the strength and toughness of the material.

Shop Practice & Instructions

When welding, it is important to always use an identifiable batch of an addition. The exact amount depends on the chosen addition type and the specific material. For example: For silicon additions in steel, the batch should be large enough to allow a content of about 0.40 % silicon in the molten pool. The batch size is often given in grams or kilograms and must be adhered to exactly.
