Threshold stress intensity factor

The stress intensity factor threshold is the minimum stress at which a crack grows under cyclic loading. Below this stress, crack growth is arrested.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The stress intensity factor (SIF) describes the stress at a crack tip under dynamic loading. It is a measure of the stress amplitude that leads to crack growth.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A low SIF means that the material grows cracks under low stress. This can lead to hot cracking and fracture in the weld area. If the SIF is too high, crack propagation can continue uncontrollably.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To minimize the SIF, pay attention to proper cooling of the weld. Use suitable protective layers and avoid rapid temperature changes. For highly stressed applications, precise stress control is essential.
