Gravity Segregation

Gravity segregation is the process where heavier elements in liquid alloys settle and collect due to density differences. This can lead to uneven composition and porosity.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Gravity segregation occurs when elements in a liquid weld pool have different densities. The heavier components sink below the lighter ones and accumulate at the bottom of the weld pool.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

This uneven composition can lead to porosity, especially if the heavier element binds oxygen and acts as a deoxidizer. This can weaken the weld and cause cracks.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To avoid gravity segregation, make sure the weld pool is well mixed. You can do this by constantly lifting and stirring the melt. Some alloys require special mixing methods or the use of emulsions to minimize density differences.
