Fatigue Strength Assessment
A fatigue strength assessment is an engineering evaluation of the durability of safety-relevant components, considering service loads and geometric factors. It serves to prevent premature failure.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
A fatigue strength assessment analyzes how parts react under recurring mechanical loads (vibrations). It takes into account both the operating loads and the geometric properties of the part.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Wrong welding parameters or insufficient heat treatment can hurt the fatigue strength, which can lead to premature failure. It is decisive that the weld and the whole part are sufficiently durable under the given operating conditions.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For a satisfactory fatigue strength assessment, keep these points in mind:
• Determine operating loads: The maximum and average load the part is subjected to.
• Analyze geometry factors: The shape and size of the part influence its fatigue strength.
• Check welding parameters: Make sure the weld was carried out correctly and has no defects.
• Verify heat treatment: Correct heat treatment (e.g. normalizing or tempering) is decisive for good fatigue strength.
