Vibratory Finishing
Vibratory finishing is a mass finishing process where workpieces are vibrated with abrasive media and liquid. This results in uniform edge rounding and surface smoothing.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Workpieces and abrasive media are vibrated in a liquid (e.g., oil). The vibrations cause continuous contact between workpiece and abrasive, leading to surface abrasion.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The uniform edge rounding and surface smoothing improve the mechanical properties and appearance of the workpiece. However, excessive abrasion can impair hardness or strength if not carefully controlled.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Use a vibration frequency of 30-50 Hz and a speed of 10-20 m/s. The duration of the finishing process depends on the desired result, but typically ranges from 5 to 15 minutes. Make sure to change the liquid regularly and clean the workpieces before and after the process.
