Stress Range

The oscillation width is the difference between the highest and lowest point of a stress cycle in a load sequence. It indicates how much the stress can fluctuate.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The stress amplitude describes the amplitude of the stress oscillations in a load cycle. It is the difference between the maximum and minimum stress levels.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

A high stress amplitude can lead to increased material fatigue, as it alternates more frequently between tension and compression. This increases the risk of cracks and fractures in the material.

Workshop practice & instructions

To minimize the stress amplitude, you should:

• Regulate the stress oscillations.

• Apply a constant load to the material.

• For mechanical connections, ensure that all parts are loaded evenly.
