Secondary carbides

Secondary carbides are fine carbide precipitations that form during tempering or cooling from supersaturated solid solutions. They contribute significantly to increasing the high-temperature strength and wear resistance of alloyed steels.

Secondary carbides precipitate from the supersaturated solid solution when the material sees the right temperature during tempering or cooling. They make the structure harder and more wear-resistant, but if you have too much carbon in it or cool incorrectly, the grain becomes coarse and toughness suffers – then the part tends to crack.
