Rare earth metal treatment

Rare earth metal treatment: adding lanthanides to reduce residual gases and sulfur, increases oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Lanthanoids bind oxygen and sulfur from the weld pool. This prevents the formation of pores and improves the mechanical strength of the metal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without this treatment, residual gases and sulfur can lead to pore formation, which impairs the strength of the weld. Too much lanthanoid can coarsen the microstructure and reduce toughness.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Carry out the treatment before welding by mixing lanthanoids into the weld pool material. Pay attention to the correct dosage: approx. 0.1 to 0.5 % lanthanoid in the metal. Make sure the material cools down well to ensure a homogeneous distribution.
