Sensor-Based Gap Measurement

Sensor-assisted gap measurement captures joint dimensions immediately before welding and automatically regulates the heat input to avoid burn-through.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Sensor-based gap measurement uses special sensors to measure groove width and depth in real time. This data is then transmitted to a control unit that adjusts the heat input of the welding machine accordingly.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

If the gap dimensions are uneven or fluctuate, incomplete fusion can occur without automatic adjustment of the heat input. This leads to incomplete joint closure, reduced mechanical properties, and increased risk of cracking. Sensor-based gap measurement prevents these problems through precise adjustment of the heat input.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

1. Install the sensors at the appropriate locations on the welding machine to capture the gap dimensions.

2. Connect the sensors to the control unit and make sure the data is transferred correctly.

3. Calibrate the sensors regularly to ensure their accuracy.

4. Set up the control unit so that it automatically adjusts the heat input based on the measured gap dimensions.

5. Continuously monitor the measurement data and the adjustment of the heat input to ensure the welding processes are carried out optimally.
