Visual Testing
Visual inspection is a basic visual check of welds to detect external irregularities and surface defects. It is carried out immediately after welding.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Visual inspection involves directly looking at the weld under normal lighting conditions. No special methods or equipment are required, just a sharp eye and a thorough check.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Visual inspection is crucial for detecting visible defects such as porosity, cracks, deformations, or insufficient fill. Irregular structures or missing weld fill can reduce mechanical properties and increase the risk of failure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
1. Timing: Perform the visual inspection immediately after welding, before the weld cools or discolors.
2. Viewing: Use a strong light and a magnifying glass (if necessary) to examine the surface closely.
3. Criteria: Look for missing weld fill, uneven fill heights, porosity, or visible cracks.
4. Documentation: Note all found defects and save images for traceability.
