Visual Weld Reinforcement Inspection

Visual inspection of weld reinforcement checks the height and shape of the weld to ensure it is within the allowable range and provides a smooth transition to the base material. This prevents unacceptable notches under service load.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Visual inspection of weld reinforcement refers to checking the height difference between the weld and the base material. Correct reinforcement is crucial for mechanical strength and the aesthetic appearance of the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Too high reinforcement can lead to increased stress concentration, which may cause cracks or notches under service loads. Too low reinforcement may not adequately cover the base material, leading to incomplete fusion.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

The reinforcement should be in the range of 1.5 to 2 mm. This can be checked using a microscope or an optical prism. If the reinforcement exceeds 2 mm or falls below 1.5 mm, rewelding is required. Make sure the weld has a smooth and continuous transition to the base material.
