Silicon
Silicon binds oxygen and prevents porosity in fusion metallurgy. It increases strength and scale resistance, but too high a content can lead to embrittlement.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Silicon reacts with oxygen in the molten pool to form silicate. This prevents pore formation because the oxygen is no longer available to react with the metal.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
High silicon content can lead to embrittlement, especially if carbon is present in the melt. This can cause hot cracking and reduced stress transfer capability in the structure.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Use silicon in the amounts specified by the manufacturer. Monitor the oxygen content and ensure proper cooling of the weld to avoid pore formation.
