Silicon Graphitization Effect
Promotion of the precipitation of elemental graphite instead of cementite in cast iron alloys during solidification through the presence of dissolved silicon.
Silicon is an important deoxidizer in weld metal. It binds oxygen and thus prevents pore formation. At the same time, it calms the weld pool and makes it more fluid. Too much silicon, however, makes the weld hard and brittle, which is bad for toughness. The content has to be right, then you get clean, solid weld metal.
