Silicon solid solution strengthening

Silicon solid solution strengthening increases the yield and tensile strength through dissolved silicon in the ferrite lattice. It also serves as deoxidizer and prevents porosity, but too high a content increases hardenability.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Silicon solid-solution strengthening is a process where silicon dissolves in the ferrite lattice and strengthens the crystal lattice. This happens by enlarging the crystal structure and reducing the degrees of freedom of the atoms.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Silicon increases the strength and toughness of steel by preventing porosity and stabilizing the structure. But too high a silicon content (over 0.40 %) can cause hardening, which affects machinability and dimensional stability. This can lead to hot cracks and other hardness issues in the weld pool.

Shop Practice & Action Points

For effective silicon solid-solution strengthening, keep the silicon content between 0.2 % and 0.4 %. At higher levels, you need to carefully control the welding process to minimize the risk of hardening. Cool slowly to stabilize the structure and avoid porosity.
