Sintering Neck Growth Model
A physical model describing mass transport mechanisms and the enlargement of contact areas between adjacent metal particles at the onset of the heating process.
During sintering, metal particles grow together through diffusion processes. At the contact points, so-called sinter necks form, which enlarge the contact area between the particles and thus ensure a firm bond. If diffusion doesn't work properly, the particles remain only weakly bonded. The result is a porous, brittle structure with poor strength – exactly what you don't want when welding. So make sure temperature control and time are right so that diffusion can proceed cleanly. With the right settings, you get a dense, load-bearing component.
