Scale Factor

Scale factor is a mathematical correction factor used to convert hardness values between different test methods. Without a universal linear correlation, empirical conversion tables are essential.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The scale factor is used to adjust hardness values obtained by different test methods. Since measurements can vary due to different sample preparation and test conditions, direct comparability isn't possible.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Incorrect conversion of hardness values can lead to inaccurate evaluations of component quality. This can create risks in service, as the actual hardness of the material could be below or above the expected range.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Always use recommended conversion tables for the test method. Regularly check the accuracy of the tables you're using and adjust if needed. If necessary, use a reference material to verify the correctness of the conversions.
