Solidus temperature line
The solidus temperature line is the limit in the phase diagram below which a material is completely solidified. It defines the solidification range.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The solidus line marks the temperature below which a liquid metal is completely solid. This transition happens as the atoms cool down and solidify.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
If the weld cools below the solidus line, it can result in a too-hard microstructure. This increases residual stress and raises the risk of cracks and hot cracking.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To get a uniform microstructure, cool the weld so it stays above the solidus line. You can do this with controlled cooling methods like thermal insulation or limiting the cooling rate.
