Powder Sphericity

Sphericity of powder particles affects flowability and bulk density.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Spheroidization degree describes how close powder particles are to an ideal sphere. Gas-atomized powders are formed into spherical shape by the building of gas bubbles.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

High spheroidization degree leads to better flowability and higher bulk density in the powder bed. This improves weld bead quality and prevents porosity. Low degree can cause uneven distribution and poor flowability, leading to porosity and failed welds.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use powders with a spheroidization degree of at least 90%. Check powder quality regularly. If sphericity is too low, the powder can be gas-atomized again to increase the degree.
