Spray Pickling
Spray pickling is a chemical cleaning process in which liquid pickling agents are sprayed onto the metal surface. It removes oxide layers and prepares the surface for welding.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Spray pickling uses liquid pickling agents that spread over the metal surface and dissolve oxide layers. The chemical reaction between the pickling agent and the oxides removes the layer.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
A clean, oxide-free surface is crucial for a good weld. Without spray pickling, oxide layers can lead to porosity and weak spots that impair joint strength. Additionally, lack of cleaning can cause corrosion.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use special acid-resistant equipment for spray pickling. The pickling agents should be applied in a closed system to avoid environmental pollution. Ensure the surface is completely and evenly treated. The application time depends on the pickling agent and surface condition, but typically ranges from about 30-60 seconds.
