Spatter Loss

The loss of material through uncontrollably ejected liquid weld droplets during arc welding. It reduces process efficiency and requires subsequent cleaning operations.

Spatter occurs when the weld pool gets too turbulent, usually from too much energy or incorrect gas flow. The molten metal is then thrown out of the pool and lost as material. The spatter can also stick to the surface and require tedious removal, or in the worst case cause defects in the structure. If you have too much spatter, first turn down the power and check the gas amount, often it's because the arc is burning too hard. Also, incorrect electrode or torch guidance can make the pool boil, so try a calmer, more even feed.
