Trace Element Effect

Trace elements like bismuth, lead, or tin strongly affect high-temperature properties, even at very low concentrations.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Trace elements react with the metal and change its crystal structure or chemical composition. For example, bismuth can coarsen the grain structure, which increases toughness.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Wrong trace elements can lead to changes in the grain structure, such as a weld that is too hard or too soft. This can cause cracking, wear, and low toughness.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

Make sure the weld metal purity is high and trace elements are within controlled limits. If needed, use special cleaning processes or metals with low trace element content.
