Trace element contamination

Trace element contamination refers to unwanted metals like tin, lead, or antimony in the weld. These coarsen the grain and lead to increased hot cracking susceptibility.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Trace elements like tin, lead, or antimony react with the metal in the weld zone. They enlarge the grain and impair the homogeneous structure of the microstructure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

These impurities lead to increased hot shortness, as the metal becomes less flexible. This can lead to cracks and fractures during use or during temperature changes.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Avoid contamination through clean weld preparation and the use of pure material. For evaporation welding, pay attention to the use of purity filters. Regularly check the weld pool for trace elements and remove them if necessary.
