Stabilization

Stabilization in stainless steels by tying up carbon with titanium or niobium prevents chromium carbides that impair corrosion resistance.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Titanium and niobium tie up carbon in the molten weld pool. This prevents the formation of chromium carbides, which are prone to cracking and corrosion.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without stabilization, chromium carbides can form, which impairs the strength and corrosion resistance of the weld. This leads to increased susceptibility to cracking and corrosion.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use titanium or niobium as stabilizing agents when welding stainless steels. The amounts are specified in the material data sheets. Pay attention to proper cooling steps to ensure a homogeneous distribution of the stabilizer.
