Rod graphite

A special morphological form of graphite precipitation in cast iron where carbon crystallizes in rod-like clusters instead of planar lamellae. This formation enhances the isotropic strength of the microstructure.

Temper carbon is a microstructure in cast iron where carbon is present as small rods instead of flakes. This makes the material tougher and less prone to cracking. When welding, it's important to keep heat input low and cool slowly, otherwise you'll get hard, brittle cementite instead of the desired structure. If you cover the weld after welding or preheat with a torch, you give the material time to precipitate the carbon cleanly.
