Steel Corrosion
Steel corrosion is the chemical breakdown of steel under the influence of water and oxygen, resulting in porous rust. This can impair the strength and appearance of the material.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Steel consists mainly of iron and carbon. In the presence of water and oxygen, iron reacts with these substances to form rust. This process is a chemical oxidation process in which iron is converted into iron sulfate.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Steel corrosion can impair the mechanical properties of steel by reducing strength and stress range. Porous rust can also lead to cracks and wear, especially under mechanical stress. This can cause safety issues in machinery and structures.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
To prevent or combat steel corrosion, the following measures should be taken:
• Remove rust: Use rust abrasives or chemical deoxidizers to remove existing rust.
• Protective measures: Apply protective paints or coatings to the steel to prevent contact with air and water.
• Maintenance: Regular inspection and cleaning of the steel can avoid the formation of corrosion.
