Fine Steel Wool Cleaning
Steel wool fine cleaning is a manual surface cleaning method that removes light dirt and oxide. After processing, checks must be carried out to ensure no iron particles remain.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Steel wool consists of fine steel fibers that apply mechanical force to the surface being cleaned. This force removes light dirt and oxide through friction.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
If not cleaned properly, residual iron particles can get into the weld. This can lead to porosity and reduced strength. Additionally, dirt can affect weld quality and lead to incomplete fusion or hot cracks.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use steel wool with a fineness of at least 120 µm. Clean the surface in a circular motion to achieve an even result. Use fine sandpaper (e.g., P320) to check for remaining iron particles. Make sure the surface is clean and free of dirt before starting to weld.
