Static Bending Strength
Static bending strength indicates how much force a material can withstand before it breaks when slowly bent. It is important for materials like cast iron and ceramics.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Static bending strength describes the maximum force a material can withstand under continuous loading before it breaks. This process occurs through deformation of the material structure until fracture occurs.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
For brittle materials like cast iron or ceramics, static bending strength is critical. A value that is too low can lead to premature fracture and thus safety issues. During welding, care must be taken not to stress the material beyond its bending strength.
Workshop practice & instructions
To determine static bending strength, the material is slowly bent and the force measured until it breaks. For cast iron, the maximum load should be below 150 N/mm². For ceramics, this is typically below 60 N/mm². Make sure the weld seam is not loaded beyond these limits to avoid fractures.
