Static bending test
The static bending test checks the bending behavior and strength of materials under continuously increasing load. It is applied to brittle materials or components subject to bending stress.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The static bending test refers to a test where a material is continuously loaded until it suddenly breaks. This process indicates the maximum bending moment and the bending strength of the material.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
For brittle materials or components with high bending requirements, the static bending test is crucial. A test pressure that is too low may not correctly represent the actual behavior of the material, leading to inaccurate results. A pressure that is too high could damage the material or give incorrect fracture limits.
Workshop Practice & Procedures
For the static bending test, a special testing device is used that allows a continuous build-up of load. The load is measured in Newtons (N) and recorded. The test should be conducted at a constant speed to achieve accurate results. The maximum load before the material breaks indicates the bending strength.
