Static tensile test
Static tensile test determines yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break under constant load. Shows the plastic and elastic behavior of the material.
Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism
A static tensile test observes how a material responds to a continuous, uniform pulling force. It shows how much the material stretches (elongation) and what force it withstands before breaking (ultimate tensile strength).
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The results of the static tensile test help select the right materials for specific applications. Choosing the wrong material can lead to too-low tensile strength or too-high ductility, which creates risks in service.
Workshop Practice & How-To
When running the test, the material is pulled in a tensile testing machine. Stress and strain are watched until the material breaks. The data is then used to calculate the yield point (where the material starts to deform plastically), the tensile strength (maximum force per area), and the elongation at break (total stretch at failure).
