Root Face
Root face area is the untapered, parallel part of the joint face at the root. It prevents arc burn-through and ensures a stable weld.
Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism
The root face forms an unfused area on the joint flank that the arc doesn't touch directly. This prevents burn-through and ensures a stable weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without a root face, the arc can hit the joint flank directly, causing irregular welding and possible cracks. A missing or too small root face increases the risk of hot cracks and coarsens the grain structure.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Make sure the joint flank has a sufficiently large root face. This can be achieved by correct welding parameters and careful part preparation. A typical root face height is about 0.5 to 1 mm. Always watch the welding process for irregularities and adjust welding parameters as needed.
