Root face height of weld preparation
Root face height of the joint preparation is the thickness of the metal that is not removed between the workpieces. An excessive root face height can lead to uneven deformation and porosity.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The root face affects local stress conditions and the melting behavior of the metal. An excessive root face can lead to uneven deformation and high stress levels, causing porosity and fracture points.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
An excessive root face increases the risk of hot cracking and uneven stress states. This can lead to failed weld attempts and poor joint quality.
Shop Practice & How-To Instructions
The root face should be between 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm, depending on material and welding method. For heavy steels or high stress conditions, a larger root face (up to 2 mm) is allowed.
