Root face height
Root face height is the remaining unbeveled height at the root edge to control root penetration and avoid burn-through.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
The web height affects the cooling rate of the weld. A web height that is too high can lead to slow cooling, which coarsens the structure and reduces the toughness of the steel.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
A web height that is too high increases the likelihood of burn-through and distortion. A web height that is too low can lead to inadequate control of root penetration, which can result in hot cracks and lack of weld volume.
Workshop practice & action instructions
The optimal web height is typically between 1 and 2 mm. For heavy steel grades or under high stress conditions, the web height should be lower to ensure fast and controlled cooling.
