Root face

Root face is the blunt edge at the joint root before beveling, which prevents arc burn-through during root welding.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The bridging ring forms a barrier against the arc light because it blocks direct access to the root of the joint. This prevents the light from directly hitting the metal surfaces and causing uncontrolled burn-throughs.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A missing bridging ring increases the likelihood of uncontrolled burn-throughs and can lead to incomplete weld or even cracks. This can compromise the strength of the joint.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Before root welding starts, the joint root must be faced so that a bridging ring of about 0.5 to 1 mm remains. This ensures a safe weld and prevents uncontrolled burn-throughs.
