Vertical-up welding position

Vertical-up position is a welding position on vertical surfaces where the motion is from bottom to top to achieve sufficient penetration.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The vertical-up position allows the weld gap to close slowly during welding, preventing air and other gases from entering the weld, which avoids porosity.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

If handled incorrectly, penetration can be too shallow, leading to lack of fusion and poor mechanical properties. Also, moving too fast can alter the microstructure and cause hot cracking.

Shop Practice & Instructions

Use speed-limited movement for vertical-up positions to ensure penetration. Movement should be continuous and uniform. For heavy steels or high restraint, consider additional shielding gas treatment.
