Narrow groove joint
Steep flank groove has very steep flank angles, reduces groove volume and heat input, prevents distortion. Ideal for mechanized welding processes.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The steep bevel has very steep side wall angles (often 45° or more), which drastically reduces the joint volume. This minimizes heat input and distortion during welding since less metal is in contact with air.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Reducing joint volume and heat input lowers the risk of porosity and distortion. However, too steep an angle can cause high stress buildup, leading to cracking or splitting. Also, welding with very steep bevels can be more difficult and require higher precision.
Shop Practice & Instructions
Use steep bevels in mechanized welding to minimize porosity and distortion. Make sure the angle is not too steep (max 45°) to avoid cracking or splitting. Ensure welding is done with high precision to achieve desired results.
