Stellite

Stellite are cobalt-chromium alloys for maximum wear protection. They are applied as hardfacing to valve seats, cutting edges, and grinding tools and stay hard even at high temperatures.

Stellite is a cobalt-based alloy with chromium, tungsten, and carbon. The hard carbides sit in a tough cobalt matrix, which makes the stuff extremely wear-resistant, even when it gets hot. When hardfacing, you have to watch out: the layer is hard and breaks quickly. Without preheating and slow cooling, you'll get cracks. The material is good for valve seats, cutting edges, and grinding tools where tool life matters.
