Nitrogen Pick-up Effect

The uncontrolled absorption of nitrogen from the surrounding atmosphere during metallurgical processes. This can lead to undesirable porosity or brittle phases in the material.

Nitrogen in the weld pool is usually undesirable. It can escape from the melt during cooling and form pores. In some steels, it also leads to a hard, brittle structure that makes the weld prone to cracking. Keep the melt clean and shield it with an inert shielding gas like argon so that no nitrogen from the surrounding air gets into the pool. And do not let the weld cool too quickly, otherwise the structure becomes unnecessarily hard and brittle.
