Nitrogen-martensite interaction
The pinning of dislocations by interstitially dissolved nitrogen in the tetragonal martensite lattice. This effect increases the yield strength but can lead to strain aging embrittlement if deoxidation is insufficient.
Nitrogen can enter the weld during welding and change the structure there. It dissolves in the lattice and blocks dislocation movement, which increases yield strength and hardness. That can be good for toughness, but if the weld cools too quickly, the material becomes hard and brittle. So you have to watch for controlled cooling so that nitrogen doesn't lead to embrittlement and the weld keeps its service life.
