Nitrogen Martensite Strengthening
Nitrogen martensite strengthening increases the hardness and tensile strength of martensite through interstitially dissolved nitrogen, similar to carbon.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Nitrogen is absorbed in martensite as an interstitial element. This alters the crystal structure and tightens atomic spacing, increasing hardness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Too high nitrogen content distribution can lead to overly hard martensite, reducing formability and toughness. This can cause cracks and fractures in the material.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Make sure the nitrogen content in the weld pool stays below 0.1 %. For high-strength steels with martensitic structure, use slow cooling and control nitrogen absorption.
