Nitrogen absorption in the arc

Nitrogen absorption in the arc leads to porosity and reduces the mechanical properties of the weld.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Nitrogen is absorbed into the arc during welding when the gas shielding is insufficient. This nitrogen forms pores and alters the metal's microstructure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Pores reduce the strength and toughness of the weld, leading to cracking and failure. In addition, the altered microstructure can cause poor thermal conductivity and increased susceptibility to corrosion.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To prevent nitrogen absorption, effective gas shielding is essential. This includes using shielding gases such as argon or helium, as well as proper ventilation of the work area. Control air flow to protect the arc and minimize nitrogen absorption.
