Nitrogen binding by aluminum

Aluminum binds dissolved nitrogen as stable nitrides and prevents corrosion. This increases the aging resistance of the materials.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Aluminum forms stable nitrides when in contact with dissolved nitrogen. These compounds are very stable and prevent aluminum from being exposed to corrosion.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Binding nitrogen with aluminum reduces susceptibility to corrosion and increases the service life of parts. However, too much aluminum can lead to a too-soft alloy, which impairs mechanical properties.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use aluminum in proportions from 0.1 to 0.3 % for nitrogen binding. Make sure the aluminum is properly dissolved and the temperature during welding is not too high to avoid a too-soft alloy.
