Edge Blasting Radius
Shot edge rounding is the mechanical rounding of sharp component edges by targeted blasting processes to avoid notch stress peaks and ensure successful coating.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Radiusing sharp edges reduces stresses by rounding off the metal. This prevents notch stress peaks that can cause defects during coating processes.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Sharp edges can cause high local stresses and notch stress peaks. These lead to coating defects like cracks or paint failure. Radiusing edges avoids these problems, improving the quality of the final coating.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a CO₂ blaster or laser radiation to round off edges. The radius should be at least 1 mm deep to ensure no sharp tips remain. Adjust the beam direction and intensity so that the material is rounded evenly without excessive deformation.
