Abrasive Media Size Distribution
The grain distribution of the abrasive in a shot blasting machine determines the impact properties and is monitored by sieve analysis.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The particle size distribution of the blasting media affects how strongly and evenly the energy is distributed on the workpiece. Small particles lead to stronger impacts and increase the melting rate, while large particles provide a lower but more controlled energy distribution.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
An uneven particle size distribution can lead to irregular melting processes and uneven stress states, which in turn can cause cracks or deformations in the workpiece. Additionally, it affects the strength of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
The particle size distribution should be regularly monitored through sieve analysis. If the distribution is uneven, the blasting media can be replaced or reprocessed. Recommended particle sizes vary depending on the material and welding process, but typically they range between 10 and 50 µm.
