Abrasive Roughness Profile

The surface profile created by the impact of abrasive. Characterized by the roughness depth. Influences the adhesion of subsequent coatings.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

When the blasting media impacts the material surface, microscopic cracks and deformations occur. These create a rough surface profile with a specific roughness depth.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A too low blasting media roughness profile can cause subsequent coatings to adhere poorly and fall off. A too high roughness profile increases stresses in the material surface and can lead to damage or corrosion.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

The roughness depth should be between 5 and 20 µm, depending on the chosen coating material. Check the roughness depth with a microscope or a special measuring device after blasting. Adjust the blasting power and impact speed accordingly.
