Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing
A magnetic inspection method for detecting near-surface and volumetric flaws in ferromagnetic materials by measuring escaping leakage fields. It is primarily applied in the continuous inspection of pipes and sheets.
You magnetize the part and run the probe over it. If the magnetic field changes at a spot, you've found a crack or another defect. It's important that the surface is clean, otherwise you get false indications. The test is good for surface-near defects, which is exactly what you want to check after welding. If you're unsure whether the indication is real, grind the spot and test again.
