Scattered Light Surface Inspection
Stray light surface inspection uses laser light to detect surface defects. It is a quick quality control for sheets and profiles.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
This method uses a laser beam that is reflected off the surface of a material. The reflection of light varies depending on surface flaws such as cracks or unevenness. These variations are captured by a detector and converted into electronic signals.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Scattered light surface inspection is especially important for controlling surface flaws that can occur during the welding process. Cracks or unevenness can lead to deformations or waste of strength. Precise inspection ensures that only defect-free materials are further processed.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use scattered light surface inspection before welding and after the manufacturing phase. Set the laser at a constant distance from the surface to be inspected. The detector settings depend on the material type, but in general you should achieve a minimum contrast of 10:1. If flaws are detected, mark and document them immediately.
