Light Scattering Method

Stray light method measures backscattered laser light on the surface to quantify roughness and fine microcracks. It offers high measurement speeds.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Laser light is directed at the surface, and the backscattered light is measured. The intensity of the backscattered light varies with the surface structure: roughness or microcracks reflect light differently than smooth areas.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

The scattered light method detects fine microcracks and roughness that can result from welding processes. These can lead to further corrosion or mechanical failure if not corrected. It is especially important in quality assurance of weld surfaces.

Workshop practice & action instructions

Use the scattered light method according to the manufacturer's specifications. Make sure the surface is clean and free of contaminants. The measurement should be carried out in a calibrated system to obtain reliable results. If roughness or microcracks are detected, measures such as polishing or additional welding should be taken.
