Scatter Radiation Compensation in Radiography
Stray radiation compensation reduces unwanted secondary radiation in X-ray images, improving signal-to-noise ratio and increasing contrast.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Scattered radiation is created by reflection and absorption of primary rays on materials in the X-ray image. This unwanted radiation can contaminate the image and reduce contrast.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
When checking weld quality with X-rays, high scatter values can lead to unclear images, making it harder to detect flaws. This can cause misunderstandings and potential defects.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use special filters or software to reduce scatter. Set the parameters so the signal-to-noise ratio is optimized (e.g., an SNR of at least 10:1). Regularly check image quality and adjust settings accordingly.
