Stringer Bead

A stringer bead is a straight weld that is made without transverse movement of the electrode. It produces a thinner and smoother weld with less porosity.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

A stringer bead is produced by a constant, straight pull of the electrode. This prevents transverse movements and results in a uniform weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The stringer bead is especially suitable for delicate parts or high-precision requirements. It prevents porosity and increases weld strength. However, an inaccurate pull can cause uneven stresses, which may lead to cracks in the material.

Shop Practice & Action Guidelines

Use a straight electrode and ensure it is pulled without transverse movement. A speed of 3 to 5 mm/s is typical. Regularly check the weld for porosity and adjust the travel speed if necessary.
