Structural defect

Structural defects are local deviations from the regular atomic lattice, such as vacancies or dislocations. They impair the strength and toughness of the material.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Structural defects arise from the deviation of atomic arrangement from the ideal lattice. This can be caused by material fusion, mechanical stress, or chemical reactions.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks When Welding

Structural defects can lead to cracking and breakage, as they impair stress absorption in the material. They lower strength and increase susceptibility to hot cracking and cold cracking.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Avoid structural defects by adhering to correct welding parameters: use appropriate shielding gas mixtures, control temperature, and prevent rapid cooling. If suspicious, perform a microscopic examination.
